Abstract

An ethnobotanical study was carried out in rural communities of the "Isabel Rubio", Guane municipality, Pinar del Río province, with the objective of designing a strategy for the promotion of the uses of medicinal forest species. The communities studied have a total of 3564 habitants, in 1212 households. The ethnobotanical study was performed using the open interviews method. Thirty-six species were listed, belonging to 19 botanical families. The most represented families are; Rutaceae, Meliaceae, Annonaceae. The most frequent therapeutic uses were those related to the respiratory, renal and digestive systems. A total of 5 species were promising. The transmission of knowledge occurs vertically, from parents to children, with relevance of the role of mothers and grandmothers, it is verified that there is erosion of knowledge about the use of forest species for therapeutic purposes and the strategy is designed to promote between children and young people the use of these species.
