Abstract

The work took place from October 2014 to March 2015, in a montane rainforest, with an area of 6 172.2 ha, belonging to the Base Business Unit (UEB) «Cayogüín», Guantánamo province, with the aim of assessing the current state of the structure and diversity of woody species. 11 plots of 500 m2 were erected randomly distributed, the sample size was validated by the area-species curve. The forest was characterized from the study of alpha diversity (á), beta (â), and the elements of the horizontal and vertical structure. A total of 25 families, 36 genera, 38 species and 2 275 individuals were identified, corresponding to the herbaceous, shrubby and arboreal stratum. The families with the highest species richness were: Clusiaceae and Lauraceae with four in both cases, Fabaceae for three, while Meliaceae, Moraceae, Rubiaceae and Rutaceae appear with two. The most abundant species were Clidemia hirta (43.43 %), Carapa guianensis (20.84 %), Calophyllum antillanum (13.14 %), while C. guianensis (22,97 %), Didymopanax morototoni (9,69 %), Bucida buceras (9,58 %) are the most dominant, and the most frequent are C. hirta (91,67 %), D. morototoni (83,33 %), Cupania americana and C. guianensis (75,00 %), Hibiscus elatus (58,33 %). C. hirta, C. guianensis, D. morototoni, C. americana, H. elatus, C. antillanum, B. buceras.
