Abstract

In Cuba 30 % of mangroves are being affected by the increase in salinity and the decrease in nutrients, because of damming, pollution and unsustainable deforestation, the abrasive action of the sea on the coasts, the accumulation of sands that covers the roots, in the decrease of rainfall, among other causes. In this way, the problem centers on the degradation of the mangrove forest in the area of the La Coloma inlet, Pinar del Río, which has generated changes in the structure in the forest. For the investigation, the structural state of the mangrove forest was determined, considering the most affected, three sectors were selected: degraded, less conserved and conserved, to determine the state of degradation of the same in order to relate the presence and state of the forest with the characteristics and dasometric variables. The techniques of Integrated Geoprocessing and Landsat 7 satellite imagery of the year 2000 and Landsat 8 of 2018 were used, Normalized Differentiated Vegetation Indices (NDVI) were calculated, so that by the reflectance of the vegetation in the electromagnetic spectrum and in a qualitative way, degradation occurred in the mangrove forest in 18 years. According to the results obtained, the behavior of the forest turned out to be of low bearing and low values of diametric classes in general, dense in its majority and scarce volume of wood, the NDVI showed that although in certain places there was a discreet recovery of the vegetation, is not the current behavior of the area of the inlet where there is a manifest degradation of it.
