Characterization of tree species in peri-urban areas of the city of Pinar del Río

Abstract

The study was conducted in areas of the Colón Vial near the Guamá River, Pinar del Río city, with the objective of characterizing the main arboreal species present in the place, highlighting dendrological aspects (size, type of leaves, fruits, habitat conditions, geographical distribution, characteristics of wood, uses, most represented families and phenology). From the observations in the field the description of the species was made. Diameter and height were measured for the most representative species. The obtained field data were subsequently processed with the help of Microsoft Excel, drawing up the graphs to present the results. Twenty arboreal species were identified, being the most abundant: Gmelina arborea Roxb, Trichilia hirta L, Acacia mangium Willd. and Tectona grandis L.f. The most represented families were: Fabaceae (5), Meliaceae (4) and the family Bignonaceae (2) species respectively, the rest of the families were only represented by one species in the area. The highest species were Acacia mangium and Gmelina arborea and the largest diameter Gmelina arborea and Hibiscus elatus Sw. The data obtained in the area show that 40% of the trees are flowering and 50 % of these without flowers, the 50% fructified, 40% without fruit. The fruits predominate in capsules and legumes, facilitating the dispersion of the seeds. Timber and ornamental were determined as the main uses.
